Rivelin Valley Sheffield - Old and New

We decided to stay in the Rivelin Valley this time.  Not only is it close to Mum's Care Home but it is Dad's old stamping ground and our playground.  I have really fond memories of "The Big Ship" and 'Old Man's Head", both craggy rocks that got the imagination going.  Many a pirate adventure was carried out on that huge ship!

The Rivelin Valley is well known for its Roman artefacts but its importance in our family relates to its forges and water wheels.   Because it is such a  fast-flowing river (it drops 80 metres between Rivelin Mill Bridge and Malin Bridge), it's been used for centuries as a power source, driving the water wheels of up to twenty industries (forges, metal-working and flour mills) along its course.

I think my Grandfather made anvils at the Mousehole Forge.

Mouse hole forge above top right as it would have been in my Grandfather's time.

The HUGE ship turned out to be quite a small rock.  Oh how my heart beat as I leapt down from the prow into the swirling sea below!

Old Man's Head remains as impressive as ever!

The walk is just incredible.   Just how many shades of green can there be!
